Robert M. Cochrane
Cochrane, Robert M. - 69, of Port Greville, Cumberland County died suddenly on Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at home. Born in Amherst, he was the son of the late Kenneth J. and Gwendolyn (Kerr) Cochrane. Bob attended school in Port Greville, Parrsboro, and later attended the Provincial Normal College, Truro in 1949-50, and returned in 1954-55 for industrial arts training. He served with the marine division of the R.C.M.P. from 1952-53. He graduated from New York State University in Oswego, NY. in 1967. Bob taught school in Fox River, Halifax, Maccan, Purcell's Cove and Parrsboro. He was principal of Duncan MacMillan School in Sheet Harbour for one year and principal of South Colchester High School, Brookfield for 16 years. He retired in 1986. Following retirement, he returned to Port Greville and became very active in the community. He served as trustee of the F.P.W. Community Centre and was on the board of directors of the Age of Sail Museum. He was a member of Grace United Church and choir, where he also served for the Session. Bob enjoyed playing his guitar and violin. He enjoyed helping with numerous fund raising for the community. He leaves a loving wife of 48 years, the former Freda Wagstaff; daughter, Anna Marie Bates, and her husband, Brent, Wadena, Sask.; a son, David, at home; grandsons, Gregory and Garrett; sister, Muriel Nelson, Dartmouth; nieces, Gwen Haliburton and Judy Sutherland, both of Dartmouth; cousin, Harold Wetmore and his wife, Sarah, Port Greville. He was predeceased by a son, Robert John in infancy; sister, Merle Evans; aunt, Eva Wentmore. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Friday at Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Church, Port Greville, Rev. James Bushell officiating. A reception will follow in the church vestry. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Church Memorial Fund, the Age of Sail Heritage Centre, Port Greville or to a charity of choice. |
