Patricia M. Spicer
1926 - 2001

 

Spicer, Patricia Mary (Patty) - 74, of Spencer's Island, Cumberland County passed away on Friday, March 30, 2001 at Bayview Memorial Health Centre, Advocate Harbour after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of the late Dr. D.L. and Mrs. Lavinia (Adams) MacKinnon. She graduated from Colchester County Academy in 1946, from Dalhousie University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Sceince in pre-med, and from Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1963. She also completed a Lab Technicians course at Saint John General Hospital and a specialized course at the Univeristy of Toronto. She held a research position in the Biology Department of the University of New Brunswick. She taught for 23 years at Advocate District High School. Patty belonged to numerous organizations and volunteer groups. Through her teaching career, she was the NSTU representative, volunteer guidance counsellor, advisor for Red Cross Youth, and was very active in the Home and School organizstion, serving on the privincial board of directors. After her retirement, for many years she spearheaded the battle to keep Advocate District School open. She served with the Cumberland Children and Family Services group for many years. She was an honorary Lifetime Member of the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations an an honorary member of the Lake Ainslie Historical Society. She served with many volunteer community organizatons. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Truro. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, J.L. Maxwell Spicer; sons, Robert, and wife, Kathy, Porter's Lake; Peter and wife, Patricia, Spencer's Island; sisters, Alexa de Payan, Mexico; Winnie Cluff, United States; Jean Shaw, Halifax; brothers, John (Jack), and wife, Maxine, Fairview; Donald, and wife, Marie, Truro; grandchildren, Brett and Colin Spicer, Porter's Lake; Katie and Meg Spicer, Spencer's Island. She was predeceased by a sister, Catherine (Kaye) de Cespedes. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Spencer's Island Union Church, where funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Rev. Jean Simms-Mills and Rev. Dan Gunn officiating. Burial in the Advocate Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Patricia Spicer Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund.
