Gloria E. M. Jewers
Jewers, Gloria E. M. - 66, of Parrsboro passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at home. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late William and Aulena (Dunlop) Burton. Gloria started the Nova Scotia chapter of Muscular Dystrophy. She was awarded an Honorary Associate Alumni from Saint Mary’s University, where she worked for 13 years in the Geology Department and, primarily, as secretary to the University Vice-President of Administration. Additionally, she worked as a secretary for the Federal Civil Service-National Defense, Camp Hill Hospital (Prosthetics Division) and the Maritime Division of The Campbell Soup Company. She taught typing for night school in both Dartmouth and Parrsboro, and was the Editor for The Parrsboro Record. At age 4, she began attending Sunday school and has remained active in the church thereafter. As a young woman she attended CGIT at the United Memorial Church in Halifax, and graduated in the leadership training program course it offered. She was a CGIT leader for many years and was a holder of the Gillwell Certificate for Cub leaders. She taught Sunday school for many years and was the Sunday school superintendent at both the Parrsboro United Church and the Parrsboro Baptist Church. She was active in the Baptist woman’s missionary group and in recent years, she has led the daily vacation bible school in Parrsboro and Port Greville. She was most recently an active member of the Port Greville Baptist Church, but has also attended Woodlawn United Church in Dartmouth and Birch Cove Baptist Church in Rockingham. She is survived by her husband, Donald; daughters, Margot Jewers, New York; Wanda Jewers (Kyle Dinaut), Parrsboro; a sister, Carol Carpenter (Leonard Cobie), Hinton, Alberta; 3 grandchildren, Emily, Taylor, Kelsey; nieces, Jeannie, Debbie, Elizabeth, Susan; several great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Ian; a granddaughter, Molly; brothers, Lorne, Edmund, Brian, Gary. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, Pastor Graham Clark officiating. Burial in the Parrsboro Baptist Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care of South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro, the V.O.N. or the Port Greville Baptist Church. |
