John Lindsay Maxwell Spicer
1927 - 2004

Spicer, John Lindsay Maxwell "Max" - 77, of Spencer's Island, Cumberland County passed away on February 17, 2004, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Spencer's Island, he was the son of the late Isaac and Leah ( Meyers) Spicer. He is survived by a sister, Meredith Kerr (George), Burlington, Ont.; sons, Robbie and wife Kathy, Porter’s Lake; Peter and wife Pat, Spencer’s Island; grandchildren Brett, Colin, Katie, and Meg. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Patty; a brother, Peter. Max attended school in Spencer's Island and completed high school at Kings Collegiate in Windsor. He studied entomology at Mount Allison University and graduated from Maritime Ranger School in 1950. He was employed in the family business for 17 years. He worked as woodlands manager for Eastern Woodworkers for 2 years and worked as a Forestry Technician for the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests for 10 years. He was self-employed as a farmer and lumberman for the past 27 years. Max has served as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party and was president of the local association, served as chairman of the Advocate District School Board, was a trustee of the Spencer's Island Union Church, was a member of the Bayview Memorial Hospital Foundation, was chairman of the Bayview Memorial Hospital Board, headed a community fire brigade and later became a member of the Advocate Volunteer Fire Brigade, Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners Association, was President of the Nova Scotia Maple Syrup Producers Association, was a scout troop leader for the Advocate Community, and the Spencer's Island Community Association. He received numerous awards for his volunteer service. Max was an avid outdoorsman, loving to fish and hunt. He also in later years got great pleasure from watching his four grandchildren participate in sports. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday in Spencer’s Island Union Church, where funeral service will take place 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Rev. Jean Simms-Mills officiating. Burial in the Advocate Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Chignecto Manor, the Advocate Baptist Church or to the Spencer's Island Union Church.
