John William Durant
1916 - 2004

Durant, John William – 88, of Parrsboro passed away Thursday, November 4, 2004 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born June 26, 1916 in Parrsboro, he was the son of the late William F. and Blanche (Tibbetts) Durant. John was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #45, Parrsboro. He recently received his 55 year jewel from Minas Lodge 67, Parrsboro. During World War II, John acted as Driving Instructor with the Service Corp. in Camp Borden, Ontario. Following the war, he became a well known barber, both in Parrsboro at John’s Barber Shop and later in Halifax where he worked at Eddy’s Barber Shop, Silvers, Golden Touch (Quinpool Rd.) and Purcell’s Barber Shop (Herring Cove Rd.). He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, the former Berthena Roberts; daughters, Doris Soley (Claude), Five Islands; Shirley Evans (Arch), Port Perry, Ont.; Marilyn Fullerton (Thane), Harrison Settlement; a son, Lewis (fiancée, Carol), Parrsboro; sisters, Alice MacLellan, Pictou; Frances Parsons, Parrsboro; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Jean; brothers, Douglas, Garth and Richard. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2004 at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, where a Masonic Lodge Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 2004 in St. George’s Anglican Church, Parrsboro, Rev. Mark Pretty officiating. Burial in St. Marks Cemetery, Moose River. Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care of South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro or to a charity of choice.
