Walter A. Barteaux
"Cap"
1929 - 2006

Barteaux, Walter Austin “Cap” - 77, of Advocate Harbour, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, with his daughters by his side. Born March 14, 1929, Walter was the son of the late Vance and Sinar (Gallagher) Barteaux. Most of Cap’s career was spent at sea as a marine engineer, sailing on the Great Lakes and later between Bar Harbour, Maine and Yarmouth, NS on the MV Bluenose, and Cape Tormentine, NB and Borden, PEI on various Marine Atlantic vessels. He was the Chief Engineer of the Holiday Island at the time he retired. Walter married the love of his life, Harriett (nee Taylor), in 1960 and after living in Halifax and Moncton, they settled in Advocate Harbour in 1968. Harriett passed away in 1998. Cap is survived by his three daughters (“Dad’s girls”), Peggy Carmichael, husband Steven and children Brittany and Bradley, Halifax; Nancy Barteaux, husband Eric Durnford, Halifax, and grandson Gregory Walter Spicer, Alberta; and Carol Barteaux, Massachusetts. He was “Pa” to Greg and “Grampy” to Brittany and Bradley and they thought he was the best, as did his many grand-dogs over the years! He is also survived by his brothers Alpin, wife Marg, Trenton, NS and Millard, wife Erika, Gimli, Manitoba and by his many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Cap. Walter was predeceased by his sister Florence den Ouden, and brothers Fred, Douglas and Watson (“Benny”). Cap was a very special brother to each of his siblings and Al and Millard will miss him dearly. He was also a much-loved brother-in-law to Dwight Taylor and wife Marjorie, R. Scott Taylor and wife Ellen and to Elaine Laing (Taylor) and husband Graham, both deceased, and his nieces and nephews on the Taylor side. He was a loving presence in so many lives and he had many wonderful friends. He had a wonderful wit and sense of good natured mischief. He was a spectacular cook and it brought him so much joy to cook for his friends and family. No one will be able to top his Christmas turkey. Walter died in the palliative care unit at the VG Site and we cannot begin to thank the team of nurses, doctors and Linda Gyer for the care and support they provided throughout. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Advocate United Church, followed by a committal service at the Advocate Cemetery and reception at 3:00 pm at the Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Huntington Society.
