Madge A. Yorke
1911 - 2006

YORKE, Madge Avis - 94, Halifax, passed away September 7, 2006. Born in Fox River, Cumberland Co., she was a daughter of the late John and Georgia Winter. She was a member of the Local Council of Women, a member of Mayflower Quilters' Guild of Nova Scotia, Council of Women - Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Retired Teachers' Association, Kingfishers Hooking, and a long-time member of St. John's United Church in Halifax. Madge was a graduate of Normal College of Nova Scotia and diligently upgraded her teacher's license through summer school and extension in courses. She taught in Digby, Fox River, Halifax, McCann, and Mapleton. Madge was a beautiful quilter, rug-hooker, knitter and sewer, an avid gardener, and was an involved and cherished neighbour in her local community. She is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Yorke, Toronto; Barbara Nieuwland (Bill), Midhurst, Ont.; sister, Mabel Rowlings, Parrsboro; grandsons, Martin, Jonathan, Benjamin, Matthew, David Nieuwland, all at home in Midhurst, to whom Madge provided warm and generous support throughout their lives. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Albert Yorke; siblings, especially loved sister, Emma, and also dearly loved Aubrey, Ryerson, Irene, Minnie and Thornton. Visitation will be Sunday, September 10, 2006 from 3-6 p.m. in Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home, 2032 Robie St., Halifax, and Monday, September 11, 2006 from 2-3:30 p.m. in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Committal will follow at 4 p.m. in Trinity United Church Cemetery, Parrsboro, Rev. Sandra Riddell officiating. A reception will be held following committal in Fundy Geological Museum, Parrsboro, and all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cardiology Services, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, or take a friend to lunch to celebrate life.
