G. Wylie MacLellan
MacLellan, G. Wylie – With treasured memories of a life well lived, and hearts full of sadness, the family of Wylie MacLellan announces his passing on October 4, 2006 in his 82nd year. Born to the late Phoebe (Moore) and C. Roy MacLellan, Wylie chose to remain a lifelong resident of Economy. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Madeline (Morrison) on June 27, 2006; sister, Evelyn (Whippie) and brother, James. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Lloyd Taggart, Economy; grandson, Lloyd Wylie Taggart (Sonya Pomeroy), Amherst; nephew, Terry Whippie (Val and son, Keith); and a number of cousins. Wylie served his country during World War II when enrolled with the Royal Canadian Engineers, No. 19 Platoon entering the war in Belgium, going on to serve in Holland and when the war ended, he moved to occupied Germany. He was grateful to return home to his beloved Madie and to where he considered the best place in the world to live, his farm in Economy stretching from the shore of the Minas Basin through to the Cobequid Hills. Wylie initially raised dairy cattle and as stated in the ‘History of Economy, N.S.’ “Many people can certainly remember seeing the big shiny milk cans sitting by the roadside at Wylie MacLellan’s waiting to be delivered to Truro.” In his later years of farming he raised herds of beef cattle. A hard and meticulous worker, he continued to work his winter’s wood supply until the age of 80. The round woodpiles he built each year became a well referenced and photographed community landmark. Throughout his life, Wylie had a passion for driving and was an avid reader; however it was his grandson that brought him the most happiness. Wylie attended The Economy United Church, volunteered with the Economy Fire Brigade and had recently received his 60 year membership card from the Cobequid Legion Branch #72, Great Village. In 2002 he was proud to add to his war medals when presented with the Dutch Medal of Remembrance. We will forever remember Dad as a kind, gentle, independent soul with a terrific sense of humor, amazing wit and profound fondness for animals, especially his cats. A service of remembrance will be held at the Economy United Church on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Don MacQueen officiating and organist, Ada Welton. Burial will follow in the Economy Cemetery. A donation to the SPCA, Economy United Church or a charity of one’s choice would be equally appreciated. “He taught us many lessons, with very few words.” |
