Mary Phillips
PHILLIPS, MARY - 88, of Parrsboro, Cumberland Co. passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan surrounded by her family. Born in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, England, she was a daughter of the late Percival and Katherine (Peyton) Short. Mary loved her British heritage and enjoyed telling stories of growing up in England. She came to Canada aboard the RMS Mauritania in December of 1944 as a war bride, accompanied by her 21 month old daughter, Saundra, docking at Pier 21 in Halifax. She became a Canadian citizen in 1970. She was proud co-owner of Phil’s Restaurant and Laundromat. She is survived by daughters, Saundra Spence (George), Parrsboro; Teresa "Terry" Kaye-Phillips (Stephen Millen), Waterloo, Ont.; Kimberley Phillips, Amherst; sons, Kevin (Rozelle Morris), Parrsboro; Kendall (Patrick Burke), Mississauga, Ont.; a sister, Peg Hall and a brother, Peter Short, both of Stonehouse, England; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Rupert (1985); a daughter, Lyndis (2003); a son, Barrington in infancy (1953); a grandson, Craig in infancy (1972); brother, Gerald; step-father, Harry Pulley. Funeral service 4 p.m. Saturday [August 21, 2010] at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, Rev. Tory Byrne officiating. Burial in St. George’s Cemetery, Parrsboro. Memorial donations may be made to the L.A. Animal Shelter or to the I.W.K. Health Centre Foundation, Halifax.
