Muriel Allen
ALLEN, Muriel B. - 98, formerly of Spencer’s Island, Cumberland Co. passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2010 in Halifax. She was the oldest daughter of William C. and Winnifred (Jenks) Smith. Muriel taught school for several years in North Shore, Shinimicas, Malagash, New Annan, Fraserville and Spencer’s Island. Shortly after the Advocate Consolidated School was built, she returned to Teachers College and upgraded her teachers license, then taught in Apple River and Advocate until she retired. She was organist for the Allenville Church, a life member of the United Church Women of Advocate, the Red Cross and the Rebecca Lodge of Parrsboro. She served on many committees and was always involved in community events over the years. As secretary of the Bayview Memorial Hospital, she was instrumental in raising money to build the new health centre. There were many quilting stories to be told in her basement and elsewhere, including the famous “Crazy Tie Quilt” done for a CBC contest, as a fund raiser for the Hospital Bazaar. She and Arthur enjoyed travelling after she retired, visiting family and friends across Canada and in the United States. Once she could no long travel, she kept in touch and welcomed all who got the time to drop in for a visit. She was well taken care of during her stays at White Birches Retirement Home, Amherst and Northwood Centre, Halifax and her family sends special thanks to the staff of Northwood 2 Centre and White Birches. She is survived by daughters, Barbara Hudlin (Al), Matlock, Man.; Sheila Heitfield (Vinton), Brooksville, Florida; Glenda Dunham (Darrell), Spencer’s Island; Beverley Milbury (Charlie), Halifax; sons, Brian (Dianne), Kitchener, Ont.; Phillip, Kitchener, Ont.; Gordon (Sandy), Truro; Ralph (Lyne), Calgary, Alta.; a sister, Margaret Patriquin, Truro; 24 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 27 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, after 61 years of marriage; a grandson, Allen Elderkin; brothers, Gordon, Lawson, Chesley and Percy. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Saturday [September 11, 2010] at Smiths Funeral Home, Parrsboro, and 2-4 p.m. on Sunday [September 12, 2010] at the Spencer’s Island Union Church, where funeral service will follow at 4 p.m., Rev. Patti Blundell officiating. Burial in the Allenville Cemetery. Please family flowers only.
