Maureen F. Power
1929 - 2010

POWER, MAUREEN F. - 81, of Parrsboro passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Diligent River, she was a daughter of the late Vaughn and Flora (Chandler) Morris. Being the oldest child in a large family of nine, Maureen at an early age had to pitch in and help at home. She began her education at the Cannonville School on Glasgow Mountain but had to forego her education to stay at home to scrub clothes on a wash board, do barn chores, clean and cook. She became so competent at running the household that she would be put in charge of everything when her mother was in Parrsboro having another baby and her father was away at work. The youngest infant brother became so attached to her, he began to call here “momma.” Maureen was always a very generous person and although she had very little material luxuries, it can be truthfully said that she would “give the shirt off her back” to anyone in the family or a friend in need. She had a passion for cooking and provided many delicious meals for family gatherings. She loved spending time at her cottage in Economy and in her many flower gardens. She was a lifetime Sunday School Teacher having taught in Diligent River Baptist Church and later the Parrsboro Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Robert; sons, Vaughn Colpitts, Seattle, Wash.; Conrad Colpitts, Calgary, Alta.; Mark Arents (Diane), Nampa, Alta.; sisters, Barbara O'Laney, Amherst; Esther Boyd (Jack), Nappan; Isabelle Brown (Philip), Athol; brothers, St. Claire (Judi) and Conrad (Gerry), all of Peterborough, Ont.; Boyd (Jeannette), Brookdale; Mike, Parrsboro; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Juanita Heffler; brothers, Morley and Vaughn in infancy. Visitation 12-2 p.m. Saturday [December 11, 2010] at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, where funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., Rev. Philip Scott officiating. Burial in the Parrsboro Baptist Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or to the Southampton Baptist Church.
