G. Lorraine Crossman
1915 -2011


 

G. Lorraine (Cottenden) Crossman, RN, age 96, of Parrsboro and Halifax passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011 in Melville Lodge Nursing Home, Halifax. Born in Springhill on April 15, 1915, she was the younger daughter of the late James and Gertrude (Thomas) Cottenden. After finishing school, Mom trained as a nurse at All Saints Hospital in Springhill, graduating in 1936. She continued to nurse at the hospital until her marriage to Edgar Crossman (a former patient) in 1946. Mom resumed her nursing career in 1962 at South Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Parrsboro where she nursed until her retirement in 1980. Well known for her skill at handcrafts and baking, Mom spent many hours creating crafts and goodies for the various teas and sales at her church. Some of her favourite times were those spent with the apples of her eye - her three granddaughters. She enjoyed many hours baking with them and creating beautiful knit items for their wardrobes. A member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Parrsboro, Mom was an active member of St. George’s ACW 1, St. George’s Altar Guild, and South Cumberland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary until her move to Halifax in 1999. She was also a former member of Fundy Chapter #33, Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by daughters, Margaret Yorke, Halifax; Dorothy (Graeme) King, Berwick; granddaughters, Suzanne King, Denver, Colorado; Stephanie and Andrea King, both of Halifax; nephew, James Cottenden, Halifax; great niece, Dorothy (Howard) Browning, Binbrook, Ontario. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Crossman (1961); sister, Sarah Anne Monaghan; brother, John Cottenden; and son-in-law Harlan Yorke. Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday (April 27, 2011) at Smith’s Funeral Home Parrsboro. Funeral 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2011 in St. George’s Anglican Church, Parrsboro, Rev. Tory Bryne officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. George’s Anglican Church, South Cumberland Community Care Centre or to a charity of choice.
