Smith, Ernest M. “Ernie” - Age 89, of Parrsboro, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Colby and Ida (Hunter) Smith. Ernie was a veteran of World War II, serving as an aircraft mechanic. Following the war, he was an automobile mechanic for several years. He later was employed with Canada Post, first in Parrsboro as a postal clerk and then later as postmaster in River Hebert retiring in 1990. Ernie loved the church where he served as deacon at the Parrsboro Baptist Church, and later a trustee at the River Hebert Baptist Church. He served on the Parrsboro Town Council and was a former Mayor of Parrsboro. As well, he served as member of the Board of Trustees for the Parrsboro Regional Schools. He is survived by daughters, Suzanne Guilderson (Donald), Parrsboro; Marlene Willigar (Aubrey), Moncton; a sister, Marjorie Hannam, Kentville; brothers, Allison (Shirley), Curtis (Rose), all of Parrsboro; 8 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, the former Shirley Morris; a son, Eric; sisters, Dorothy, Myrtle, Jean; brothers, Edgar, Hartley, Carl. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 2013 at the Parrsboro Baptist Church, Rev. Philip Scott officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Reception to follow in the church vestry. Memorial donations may be made to Parrsboro Baptist Church.
