1934 - 2018

 Lewis, Leland R. 'Lee' – Age 83, of Lower Five Islands passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Colchester-East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Five Islands, he was the youngest son of the late Ralph and Alice (Patterson) Lewis. Leland attended school in Five Islands and Bass River. On finishing high school, he joined the RCAF and trained as a pilot. In 1955, he was posted to 2 Fighter Wing in France which was part of Canada’s commitment to NATO at the time. It was while there that he met Marion Burt, a school teacher in the Department of Defence school system. They were married on his return to Canada in 1959. They moved to Dartmouth where Marion taught at Dartmouth High School while Leland attended Dalhousie University. During this time, two of their children, Lorraine and Katherine were born. On graduating with a Civil Engineering Degree, they lived in several communities in New Brunswick. Their third child, Kenneth was born in Saint John and Carolyn, their youngest, in Fredericton. Their next move was to Nelson, B.C., living there for four years before returning to Nova Scotia. Marion died in November of 2007 and Leland moved back to his native Five Islands in 2012. Leland enjoyed skiing, travelling, camping, canoeing and golf. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Curtis (Elizabeth) and Lawrence in infancy. He leaves behind Mina Berry, a dear friend and companion during his last few years. He is survived by his children Lorraine, Katherine and Kenneth, all of Halifax; Carolyn Hissen (Helmut), Victoria, B.C.; three grandchildren, Alison, Patrick and Zeus, all of Victoria. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018 at St. George’s Anglican Church, Parrsboro, the Rev. Dr. Brian Spence officiating. Burial in the Lower Five Islands Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Five Islands Fire Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Phoenix Youth Programs or a food bank of your choice.
