Roy L. Fletcher
1931 - 2018
Fletcher, Roy L. – Age 87, of Amherst, and formerly of New
Salem and London, Ont. passed away Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Cumberland
Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in New Salem, he was a son of
the late Carl and Gertrude (Atkinson) Fletcher. Roy left home at fourteen years
of age and went to London, Ont. where he worked for the city of London. He later
joined the Canadian Armed Forces RCR being stationed in London. He served in the
Korean War; also, Europe, Battle School of Japan and Canada. He lived in London
for 38 years, moving back to Nova Scotia in 1977 building his home in New Salem.
He moved to Parrsboro in 2003 and to Amherst in 2005. He worked as a
Commissionaire for the Sand River Correction Centre retiring in 1990 when it was
closed. Roy was a well decorated soldier, and was a very caring and generous
man, a good friend with a great sense of humor. He is survived by his companion,
Myrna McPhee; sisters, Mona Trequair, Exeter, Ont.; Evelyn McKenny, London,
Ont.; a brother, Carl ‘Alt’, Truro; numerous nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his wife, the former Emily Baker in 2007; sisters, Cora, Marion,
Olga; brothers, Roland, Sydney. Visitation will be held 12-1 p.m. on
Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, where funeral
service will follow at 1 p.m., Rev. Dr. Brian Spence officiating. Reception to
follow at Parrsboro Legion Branch #45. Burial in the Advocate Cemetery.
