Seldon E. Benjamin

Benjamin, Seldon E. – Age 89, of Fox River passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Fox River, he was a son of the late Harry and Gladys (Allen) Benjamin. Seldon was a Supervisor at Glace Bay and Bruce Nuclear Power Plants, and at many "Water Tower Erection Sites" across Canada. His co-workers describe Seldon as  "a giant among men, loved by everyone, never had an enemy on any job, working coast to coast. He left only good memories." On the job he was often fondly referred to as "Gentle Ben".  Seldon and Donna raised their sons in Bruce County, Ontario, with the exception of a couple transfers to their native province. After Seldon's retirement, they returned to his birth place and the home they purchased when they married. Shortly after returning home they purchased Seldons' family homestead. They spent their time renovating their homes, walking the beaches, where Seldon delighted in finding unique pieces of driftwood, which evolved into his "birds on a stick" hobby. He proudly displayed them in his home with his oil lamp collection. Seldon loved to fish, hunt, attend card parties, open mics and church. He loved to travel to Ontario, New Yorke and British Columbia to visit old friends and family. He was very passionate about cooking. He loved to fry up a pan of deer steak and make a pot of seafood chowder. But he is most remembered for his "Benji Biscuits", homemade blackberry jelly and stews enjoyed by his grandkids and numerous other children who called him "Grampa". Seldon was a gentle, hardworking man. His familys' welfare was always his main concern. His sons describe him as a kind loving perfect Dad. He loved all children, but his grandchildren were his world. Seldon was "a man of few words", but when he started telling old time stories, you couldn't shut him up. He loved his family, lobster and apple pie. He is remembered for his mischievous grin and the twinkle in his eye. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Allen) Benjamin; his children, Seldon (Jane), Dubai; Douglas (Donna), Truro; Christopher (Sarita), Kelowna, B.C.; grandchildren, Sonya, Sophia, Selena, Keandra, Arianna, Sarah, Amanda, & Danny; great-granddaughters, Hazel Mae, Myeisha and Anaiya; brothers, Jim (Sharon), Port Greville; Reid, Fox River; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ethel; brothers, Kenneth, Arden, Richard. The family wishes to thank the first responders of the FPW Fire Dept, EHS Paramedics, Dr. Bowen, and nurses at both the CRHCC and the QEII. A special loving thank you to his nephew, Charles Lewis. A ‘Celebration of Seldon’s Life’ service will take place on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 2pm in Grace United Church, Port Greville. A reception will follow at the FPW Fire Hall, as Covid restrictions of that time will allow. Memorial donations may be made to FPW Fire Department, Port Greville or Grace United Cemetery, Port Greville.
