Edith V. Allen
1933- 2023
Allen, Edith V. 'Edie' - of Port Greville, Cumberland County
passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the Bayview Memorial
Health Centre, Advocate Harbour. Born in Port Greville in 1933, she was a
daughter of the late Chesley and Effie (MacDougall) Allen. Edith was a retired
school teacher having taught school for 35 years in Cumberland County, where she
made many life-long friends with teachers and students alike. After retirement,
Mum and Dad ran Greville Bay B&B for several years in their beautiful home and
had many repeat visitors from across the globe who loved their hospitality,
cooking, fresh linens that were always hung out to dry, boat tours, car drives,
you name it! They ended the B&B to care for several elderly relatives over the
years, where they were well loved and taken care of. Mum was a very talented
lady. She had beautiful flower gardens and could easily have been an interior
and exterior decorator. She was our advisor, our confidante and her love knew no
boundaries. She was so proud of her grandchildren. She was champion of the
underdog, generous in every way. She was a dedicated volunteer and an animal
lover. She loved camping and even put on a full Thanksgiving turkey supper in a
soft top camper once for us and her parents. Snow on the ground, middle of
nowhere Eatonville, not a soul in sight, the best dinner ever! How??? She could
solve any puzzle, knit, sew, play piano, she traveled, curled, skated and took
many courses for her career and for her personal enjoyment. She had a wonderful
sense of humour. She hosted countless 'biscuit nights' hot out the oven made by
Cindy and complemented by Mum's jams and jellies. She made beautiful home cooked
meals and her nephew-in-law, John, suggested we should share a favourite recipe
of hers in the bulletin, which I did in lieu of a poem. I thought, how could I
possibly choose when Eric immediately said 'meatloaf'. I said perfect, it's
comfort food! I cannot express sincerely enough how much we appreciated the love
and care she received at Bayview. Each and every person treated her as they
would their own mother or grandmother. There are too many to name and thank
individually and I would be afraid to leave someone out. Just know, we will
never forget your kindness, the delicious home cooked meals and your devotion
throughout the pandemic. So grateful you all answered your calling. Every small
community deserves a place like this. Please feel free to share your memories of
her with us at the reception. She is survived by her daughter, Shelley Allen
(Donald Tanner), Queensland; a son, Eric Allen (Carolann), Bedford and Port
Greville; grandchildren, Ella Allen-Tanner and Garrett Allen; her twin sister,
Estelle Larsen, Advocate Harbour, with whom she shared an incredible 'life-long'
bond, so much so, the we feel we were blessed to have had two mothers; her
brother, Clair Allen (Linda), Port Greville. As well, she leaves behind several
loving nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear friends and former neighbours.
She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas in 2014; sisters, Shirley and Ruth;
a brother, Eric; brothers-in-law, Raymond Cormier, James ‘Jim’ Allen, Olaf
Larsen; infant grandson, Sheldon Allen-Tanner; nieces, Ruth Nichols, Janice
DeWitt, David DeWitt, Sharon Jarvis. Visitation 1-2 pm on Thursday,
August 24, 2023 at Holy Trinity Church, Fox River, where funeral service will
follow at 2pm, Rev. Dr. Brian Spence officiating. Burial to follow in the church
cemetery. A reception will follow at FPW Community Centre in Port Greville. Memorial
donations to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fox River or to FPW Community Centre
(Fire Hall), both were very near and dear to our mother's heart and would be
greatly appreciated.
